Disclaimer: I read Cisco Networking Essentials approximately 2 years ago. This review was written shortly after and reflects my immediate thoughts on the book.I'm a big advocate of the essentials series that Sybex has begun publishing. They are full-color, high quality books, and are written with the absolute beginner in mind. However, despite my previous positive experiences with the series, I cannot recommend this latest book.Cisco Networking Essentials suffers from trying to incorporate too many subjects into too few pages. As such, the author only provides brief summaries of any technologies discussed and goes into very little depth.Imagine you are completely new to computing. You take a class at your local college and on the first day the instructor explains that a computer's CPU is what allows it to "think". Immediately your mind starts racing: "Think how? What is it thinking? What's actually happening on the electrical level? Do different CPUs think differently?" These are all great questions and a competent instructor will address them as the class progresses. But, what if instead, the instructor just stops there. No further explanation is given, no depth of material is discussed, and your entire discussion ends at "Computers use CPUs to think." This is what it feels like to read this book. The brevity with which topics are covered causes confusion and does little to help the reader in actually learning the topics presented. In addition to the above, the book is riddled with errors! They're usually small, but wrong is wrong and if you're just learning the subject for the first time, this can become extremely disorienting and frustrating. If you are serious about learning the "essentials", I would recommend diving head first into a CCENT or CCNA prep book. It's not for the faint of heart and it will be difficult at first, but as they say “from struggle comes success.”

I bought this book as a recommendation to dust off my rusty knowledge of the subject.I used to teach networking when it was new on NT 4.0 (LoL). To my surprise this book is from about that time in concepts. But, what bothers me the most is the unbelievable amount of typos, specially around bitmasks, network addresses and subnets specification. The coverage of the subjects is barely introductory and most of the time you are punted to a fore coming chapter for a more detailed explanation, that never happens. To read this book I'm using "The TCP/IP Guide" by Charles M. Kozierok to uncover the mistakes (but this is a very dry non-introductory reference). To give you a couple of examples:* In page 159, note "Make sure you increment your interval in the correct octet", the right most 'octet' has eleven (11) bits which make your learning experience very difficult.* In page 138, last paragraph of "Ping a computer in another LAN" it says: 'Access lists are discussed in Chapter 13, "Configuring Routers"'; but the subject never appears in chapter 13.Also, there is no 'Errata' in the suggested web site [...]I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, specially if they are new to the subject.

This is an excellent primer on the fundamentals of designing, managing, and maintaining a network. It starts with the basics of network topologies and moves on to more advanced topics such as applying the OSI model and Firewall installation. The chapter on Cisco IOS is especially handy, since it provides a quick reference for commonly used command props. I usually leave that chapter open when I use Packet Tracer (Cisco’s free software to virtually emulate their networking equipment). Although each chapter ends with a quiz, I wish there was more incorporation of information pertaining directly to the CCENT or CCNA certifications. If you purchase this book in preparation for a exam, I’d strongly recommend you also purchase a separate exam guide.

An excellent book that is let down by outdated information.Cisco Networking Essentials does a fantastic job covering the basic of practical networking with Cisco equipment. Unfortunately, what detracts from the confidence in the book's material is out of date recommendations and requirements that are no longer true. The books goes on for pages discussing the differences between 10baseT and 100baseT networking, in an era when 100baseT is the lagging edge of networking and enterprises are building Gigabit and 10G fiber and copper networking.Case in point, the text near Location 7609 on the Kindle edition insists that Cross-over cables are required for switch to switch connections. In Gigabit networks, there is no longer any "cross-over" considering that Gigabit is Fully Duplexed and Auto-sensing.A sad state of affairs for an otherwise excellent book that purports to have been published less than a year ago.

It's a good book. I kept trying to learn the CCNA1 book, and getting hung up and stuck. This book seems to cram too much in with just a brief overview so that you're sometimes left still wondering what the heck is going on.Overall, it's a good essentials overview book, though. A bit better for dummies like me.

Great book, I compared the topic of this book with the Cisco requirements for CCENT certification exam and all topics are covered. Beyond the CCENT exam, this book is an excellent foundation to build on a career in networking.

This book covers some very useful information in an easy to understand format without being too basic or being too complicated. I learned a lot from it.

minimal and not much detail. Summed up.... It sucks
