Review
“Phil Ryken is a master expositor of the Scripture, and he uses all his ability to beautifully unpack one of the most intriguing and difficult books of the Bible to understand―the Song of Songs. Historically, interpreters have read the book as either/or. It is either about human romance or about our relationship with Jesus. Ryken reads the book as both/and―both in its immediate historical context (about romance) and its whole canonical context (about the spousal love of Jesus Christ.) And of course, biblical wisdom about love and sexuality has perhaps never been as crucial and needed by the church as it is today. An important book for us all!â€â€•Timothy Keller, Founding Pastor, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, New York City“The Love of Loves in the Song of Songs is a book that every serious Bible student will want. A thoroughly researched, insightful, and challenging treatment of one of Scripture’s most engaging and relevant books, written by one of our generation’s finest pastoral theologians!â€â€•J. D. Greear, President, Southern Baptist Convention; author, Not God Enough; Pastor, The Summit Church, Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina“Our culture is deeply confused about sexuality and marriage. Not coincidentally, it is equally confused about the God who created humanity for a committed, exclusive, loving relationship with himself. This book shows us the remedy in the Song of Songs, the divine love song that shows us how our human marriages ought to work and how they ought to mirror Christ’s passionate love for his bride. Ryken shows us how the song speaks to everyday relationships and, in doing so, how it points us to the One who made us for himself.â€â€•Iain M. Duguid, Professor of Old Testament and Dean of Online Learning, Westminster Theological Seminary; author, Song of Songs (Reformed Expository Commentary)“Phil Ryken looks at this neglected book of the Bible, Song of Songs, on its own terms and with wonderful gospel awareness. He presents a truly thrilling vision of human sexuality along with the lover’s heart of God himself. It has had a deep impact on me already and I’d love for you to benefit from it too.â€â€•Sam Allberry, Speaker, Ravi Zacharias International Ministries; author, Is God Anti-Gay? and 7 Myths about Singleness“After reading The Love of Loves in the Song of Songs, I will never read this biblical book in the same way again. Ryken skillfully weaves into each passage God’s wisdom about both the magnificence of human marriage and the romance of our redemption. I can’t think of any Christian―single or married―who wouldn’t benefit from this book.â€â€•Jani Ortlund, Executive Vice President, Renewal Ministries“Here is a book of costly value for both single and married people! I have been blessed to read this, and through Ryken’s exposition I see how the Word made flesh in the Song of Songs is brighter and more wonderful than I imagined. Ryken’s call for obedience to Scripture’s authority is convicting, but we are given hope and help as we read. He says that this Song ‘operates simultaneously on at least two different levels,’ teaching us about Christ with his bride, which speaks to what a truly godly marriage can be, and how all of us in the body, single or married, are his true bride.â€â€•Valerie Elliot Shepard, author, Pilipinto’s Happiness and Devotedly: The Personal Letters and Love Story of Jim and Elisabeth Elliot

I'm taking a long time to get through this book and I'm not quite done with it, but it's taking such a while that I decided to review it now and update later. I really like this book. It explains things better than any book I've seen on the subject. It cleared up one thing I've always wondered about: There's a line not far from the opening of the book where the woman says, something like "I will kiss him with the kisses of his mouth" and I'm always wondered what other kisses there are, lol. I mean, what else do you kiss with? Well, turns out, they kissed another way and so do we, sometimes. Apparently in the ancient times, a kiss of friendship could be with your NOSE!! I'm assuming that it might be like when we touch noses with a child (or even a puppy or cat) sometimes. Who knew?! The point of her statement was that it was a kiss of passion, not of friendship. The book explains a lot of things like this. I'll check in when I finish it, but I'm already enjoying it very much.
The Love of Loves in the Song of Songs is the latest book by prolific author Phillip Graham Ryken, who also is the president of Wheaton College. Additionally, he is an ordained teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church. Unfortunately for me, Pres. Ryken does not bring academic rigor to his study of the Song of Songs. Instead his book might be mistaken for his preaching at his Presbyterian church. For Pres. Ryken God is a person who “wants to have an exclusive relationship†with us. A little later in his text he says that “The exclusivity of this relationship explains why it is right and good for God to be jealous.†He quotes God saying: “I the Lord your God am a jealous God.†Just a bit later he says about Jesus that “He was a wounded lover, pierced for our adulterous transgressions.†He continues in his next chapter with the statement: “The story of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden is the trailer for an epic romance that ends with the Son of God marrying his beautiful bride, the church.â€If all that I have written so far sounds good to readers of this review, they are going to be much pleased with Pres. Ryken’s book. I, on the other hand, have difficulty with God, a perfect spiritual being, being jealous or taking on any other human qualities. I can’t recommend his book for anyone who wishes to take a thoughtful and reasonable approach to The Song of Songs. That said, I am certain that many readers will enjoy Pres. Ryken’s creative interpretation of the Bible story and I recommend his book to them.
Several years ago, at our church, the decision was made to preach through the Song of Solomon (Song of Songs). We didn’t because there was consternation about the number of ways to interpret the book. The idea was scraped. Many people through the years have attempted to understand the book that is often considered the raciest in the Bible. Many of the church fathers interpreted it allegorically, giving various meanings to the characters and their actions.Ryken takes a literal interpretative approach to the Song. He sees the flow of the story going from the pursuit of love to the passion of love, the consummation. The book doesn’t end there, since living happily ever after isn’t often the case. We see a disagreement between the newly married couple and their reconciliation.Besides outlining the story, Ryken intersperses his narrative with practical applications for today. For example, in the courting stage, keep yourself pure. Married life is the place of passion.Ryken’s book comes from lectures given at Wheaton College. His audience was college students, and that is an ideal place to focus the message of the Song and the book. Mature high school students would also benefit.I found the book encouraging, instructive, and worthwhile, even for someone who has been married for forty-eight years. I could have benefited from it in my 20’s and wish it had been available then.Crossway was kind enough to provide me a copy for review in exchange for an unbiased opinion.
When I open any Song of Songs commentary, I first want to know the commentator’s point-of-view. Ryken, the President of Wheaton College, does not see this poem as an allegory, yet he does believe it contains a metaphor of God’s covenantal love for us. He sees it’s erotic language as “sexually provocative but never spiritually impure.†This is a devotional commentary, complete with a discussion guide, ideal for small groups. A friend of mine wrote his DMin thesis on the homiletical use of Song of Songs, how it was once widely popular yet rarely preached from today. Ryken points out how relevant Song of Songs is for today and provides ample material for preachers--plenty of quotes and illustrations, which the more academic commentaries lack. This is a useful addition to the literature on a Biblical book much needed in our age of sexual permissiveness and lack of commitment to marriage.
The Love of Loves in the Song of Songs looks at each verse of the Song of Songs, a book from the Bible. I always liked this book best, because I always saw it as a representation of an eternal and powerful love between God and a person. I believe it’s symbolically about a persons’ relationship with God. Our author goes a bit further. He describes some of the historical background and customs that are referred to in the Song of Songs, thus putting them into context. He also relates the Song of Songs to a monogamous love between a man and a woman. Although I do not agree with every single interpretation of the Song of Songs that he makes here, I find that this book might be a good one for meditation on these wonderful verses.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
Alongside all of the books of the Bible, the Song of Songs is probably one of the most difficult to follow, at least for me. The author has put some perspective into it that does make it easier to understand and appreciate. It's there for a purpose. I want to know more about it. This book helps.
