Janda captures the spirit as well as the stories and people of the student activist movements in Oklahoma in the 60s. Being an antiwar and free speech activist on either coast was the norm back then, but in fly-over country - especially in Oklahoma of all places - activists had to overcome fierce opposition and speak out against an immoral war and for basic freedoms. Finally, someone has told the story.As one of the participants, I treasure this book and the memories it evokes. The book describes our protest activities and it reveals the paranoia and unconscionable surveillance carried out by authorities. They thought we were a threat to the American way, and they planted spies among us, and they took pictures. We knew what they were doing, but I had no idea it was so extensive.This is a story of America at its best - young citizens from the heartland standing up for the values of peace, justice, and freedom that make this country great.

Sarah Eppler Janda is an excellent practicioner of the historian's craft. She has faithfully recreated what it was like during the 1960s Oklahoma radical student movement that struggled for civil rights, against the war in Vietnam, and for campus free speech.. Ironically, Oklahoma went from having the strongest socialist party in the country before World War I to now being one of the most Republican dominated. But through all of that, progressives and left wingers remained active, as her book attests. Her research uncovered new information about FBI misdeeds and state government surveillance of these student activists. Today's student activists and progressives can learn a lot from her book.

Dr. Janda has put together an excellent book on Student Activism as well as the attempts that were made to label, control and contain Communism. Also this book talks about censorship of ideas, people, and the lengths political leaders of both the colleges and government went to contain or out right forbid the freedom of thoughts some of which were totally misunderstood. How large of a role the FBI was in spying on these college organizations and the real power these young adults had. All of this in Oklahoma!!! I don't think I will look at the two big colleges in the state the same way and I am not even done with the book yet...On a personal note I have had the pleasure of having her as my Professor at Cameron University. This book is written the way that she teaches and I can hear her voice on the pages of this book. She is a women that I would only aspire to be like. She is kind, smart, and dedicated to being a historian. The book is thorough like she is, fair like she is, and teaches like she does to her students.
