If you sincerely want to achieve success writing instrumental music for placement in television shows, movies, ads, etc., you can help yourself quite a bit by purchasing this excellent guide by Steve Barden.This review is based on my perspective based on thirty years as a professional musician plus my few years of writing music for television. I can say with certainty that I wish I had this book when I got started, it could have saved me countless hours of well-intended rookie mistakes.Front to back the book is almost three hundred pages made up of 26 chapters, a glossary and eight useful appendices. You also get a code for online access to the 36 musical examples sprinkled throughout the book. Kindle version is not available yet.The book is written chronologically for aspiring tv composers beginning with a short history of the industry, an overview of the roles you will play or interact with, many useful definitions and then a ton of great advice based on the author’s own experiences and success. Also sprinkled throughout the book are quotes from other successful writers, music librarians and lawyers that focus on the music industry.The author breaks down the content into five sections: Defining Production Music/Uses, Composing for TV (versus film or writing songs), Technical Aspects (recording, mixing, backups, organization, etc), Money Matters and finally Networking/Social Media.Barden does a fine job of delivering a lot of useful content while walking the fine line between academic and casual tone. The writing style is casual, not academic, and certainly not boring.Given the very wide range of topics the author addresses, you should not expect this to be a comprehensive one-stop guide on how to succeed as a tv composer. Many great (and lengthy) books have been written addressing individual chapters that Barden covers. But looking back it the beginning of my tv composing journey having this book in my hands would have been so helpful. And don’t let me confuse you, this book is a great read for writers of all skill levels and experiences I found a few things in here that had me online researching (and potentially spending, I plead the fifth) new tools to use in my own studio.Note: this book is not really intended for songwriters, a different gig than instrumental cue writers. What is a cue? Read chapter 5. How is writing for tv different than film? See chapter 6. Should I collaborate with someone else? Chapter 10. Think you can do it all? No, you really can’t, but if you are stubborn read chapter 7 and start working smarter instead of harder.Other chapters cover recording your music, mixing it, how to deliver it to your clients, what to expect from library contracts, PROs, and even suggestions on how to promote your business. I say business because if you want to make money in this industry, you need to treat it like a business. The cool thing about that is that you can actually make money (potentially really good money) doing something you love.I love this book and will be recommending it to every person I meet that wants to enter this side if the music industry.

I began composing and recording production music several months ago, feeling my way in the dark. The information I was able to find online was not detailed enough. This book fills in the gaps. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in pursuing this field.Thanks so much for writing it, Steve!

Steve provides a wealth of knowledge that he learned the hard way... by doing it himself and being extremely successful! The reader benefits from his years of learning without having to go through the trial and error that he did. I recommend this book to anyone interested in T.V. production music/cues, and for that matter, any music related interests because there are many areas he discusses that transcend genre and whatever music path your focus is on...

This book is very well presented and thorough. The author offers advice and information in a generous and thoughtful manner. I am a beginner home-studio producer and was very happy with this book. I think I can use it as a reference for a long time. Thank you Steve!
