About the Author

James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

Been teaching kids for many years and Bastien is hands down the best method for introducing kids to reading music. Would recommend for anyone up to 11-12 years old! Love this series!

I use this book with my young piano students, and I think that it gives a nice, solid foundation--comprehensive but still fun and light. Word of caution: some of the songs and drawings in this book are racist. I'm planning on removing "Indian Dance," and "Basketball" is borderline.

I think the authors were probably trying to update this book with color and other changes. Yet I believe the original book actually worked better for the very young pianist. That primer allowed the child to color. It also had less artwork so it was more focused on the lesson at hand. I find students in this book are so distracted by the color and artwork that I have to keep redirecting them. So, I've now opted to use this as a supplemental book (for those who have it) and I no longer use it when I'm teaching new students.

This was the book I used when I was a kid to Learn piano and it’s what I use to start my students off, both young and old !

We bought this as recommended by my preschooler's piano teacher. My child likes the songs and everything seems to be going well. It is methodical, clear, and engaging for even a young child. However, some of the songs and pictures need to be updated for this day and age. I cringe at the some of the stereotyping images that were more socially acceptable back in the mid 80s. We haven't gotten to those songs yet, and I'm planning to ask his teacher to skip them.

I know many use the Alfred method for beginning piano, but I find Bastsien much better all around.It is straight forward with hand positions so parents can help their children (even if they don't play themselves).It moves ahead step-by-step and in no rush. I appreciate this because not only must teachers teach how to read the music and strike the correct key, but after that is accomplished, then help the student hold his body, hands and hammer correctly. It takes time and short, easy pieces help to make it all come together.

These are the books that I had as a kid learning piano, so I was thrilled to find them online. Great intro to piano and I even remembered some of the songs as I started teaching my daughter. Moves at an appropriate pace and explains the concepts well. We will be using this series as she progresses with her lessons.

Best book I could've bought!Instructions are clear and transitions easily for beginners kids/adults. If I had to rewrite the book, it would not be any better. Quizzes inside through each section helps to see if one is ready to move further.
