This was both a sad but enlightening book! I love to read about other cultures and their customs so I was enlightened by the main character & her relatives but couldn't believe as a child that she would have to live as a widow & live at her in laws to boot! I have passed this to many book friends.
This is the story of Leela who is a young girl (12) in India at the time of the initial rise of Gandhi. She is about to be married and enjoys the pleasures of her caste and is spoiled by her parents. Her cares focus mostly on new bangles and clothes. When her husband dies she becomes a widow and has a difficult time to adjusting to the restrictions that this places on her life- dull clothes, no jewelry, shorn head and restrictions to her family home for a year. Her brother helps her by finding a teacher for her so that she can continue her education at home and she slowly blossoms into awareness of the possibilities in life and the changes in the world around her. I found the cultural and historical aspects of the book fascinating and it was interesting to see Leela grow and change over time. This would be a great young adult book to introduce some history and customs of India.
Leela, who was betrothed at age 2, and married at 9, is of the Brahmin caste in India during the time of British occupation of the country. Though married, she does not live with or have relations with her husband. She continues to live with her family. Gandhi Is becoming active in rallying his people out of British rule. Now Leela, who is about 13, is going to have her anu ceremony, which will be marked by her going to live with her husband, who is of college age. She has been petted and spoiled by her family. Suddenly, her young husband dies, and Leela is widowed, which means she must forgo beautiful saris, have her head shaved, and never marry again. She must live in virtual isolation, because widows are bad luck. Keeping corner refers to staying within the family's home/yard for a year. How Leela and her family cope with her widowhood, and how Leela deals with her dreams completes the story. Too complicated to go into with out your reading it, but it is worth reading.
reading revolution
This is a fantastic book. Well written. A wake up call to life outside the US. This was my sons 9th grade reading and I honestly was intrigued couldn't put it down.
While this book was a little slow to pick up I thought it was an excellent read and perfect for young readers. It gives a taste of indian culture while providing a glimpse into the history of India during ghandi's influence.
Please remember that this book takes place in the early 1900's. It is historical, not today's news. However, in some rural areas in India there may be similar customs that are still practiced.I'm sure this book was cleaned-up for a teenaged audience. What happened to many very young widows during that time was much worse than what happens in this book. This little girl had people who loved her and were educated enough to thumb their noses at the customs of the times that weren't right. She was a very lucky girl.Very appropriate for young people.
good book to let us know of other cultures.
