Before reading this book, my knowledge of the Statue of Liberty consisted of the short explanation I had received in school: It was a gift from the French people. “The Statue of Liberty,” authored by Christian Blanchet and Bertrand Dard, offers the opportunity to learn everything about the famous statue in the New York harbor. The vision of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, the Statue of Liberty has an interesting past, and it is amazing to learn the difficulties in creating and erecting something that nowadays many take for granted. A joint effort between the French and Americans had many hurdles to overcome, and the problems did not stop once the statue was in place. Blanchet and Dard walk readers through every challenge. Many have heard the words “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses…” but may not know where those words came from, or might believe that they were on a plaque the day the statue was unveiled. The authors provide the background to this passage from a sonnet, as well as many other related stories. This book is well researched and written in a style that enlightens and entertains at the same time. Highly recommended. Five stars.

The Statue of Liberty (Kindle Edition) by Christian Blanchet, Bertrand Dardis a well-written story not only on the history of the construction and engineering of what was then the world’s largest structure of its kind, but also why the French so appreciated our nation’s democracy and yearned to embrace our freedoms as their own.“The Statue of Liberty, an eternal symbol of hope, was born out of the despair of two of the most devastating conflicts of the mid-nineteenth century: the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. By 1870, America had begun to bind up its wounds from a war that had left more than 600,000 men dead. There was a great explosion of creativity in America, whose engineering marvels and inventiveness had fired a new age of commercial progress. It was a jubilant time for the nation, which had emerged stronger than ever from its Civil War and was looking forward to its hundredth birthday only six years in the future.”Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi called the 151-foot tall, 225-ton structure "Liberty Enlightening the World". He visited America in 1871 (after serving in the Franco-Prussian War) and noted, “Everything is big here, even the peas …” He envisioned a statue of “colossal proportions”. It was a monumental effort by Bartholdi who designed it, Gustave Eiffel, who created its iron skeleton, and Gaget, Gauthier et Compagnie, the workshops that built, then dismantled and packed up Lady Liberty for her transatlantic voyage to New York. The people of France desired peace and a government of democratic stability. They admired and appreciated what the United States had achieved, including recovering from the Civil War. In fact, French intelligentsia were shocked by Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and sponsored a public subscription drive to create a gold medal in Lincoln’s memory and the Union he preserved for his widow, Mary Todd Lincoln. More than 40,000 Frenchmen contributed.Édouard René Lefèbvre de Laboulaye, a friend of Bartholdi and a dedicated liberal who embraced American democracy and France’s participation (“a midwife of the American Revolution”), developed the idea beginning in 1865 of presenting a statue representing liberty as an exquisite gift to celebrate the forthcoming anniversary, further the bonds between the two nations and as a symbol for ideas suppressed by Napoleon III.Remarkably though, the idea of a such a structure was not immediately embraced. “If newspaper editorials were any guide, [there was] cause for concern with the cool reception afforded to the statue by many Americans. Some of them tailed the proposed monument a French oddity, “almost too fantastic and too poetic ever to be realized.” “Some papers were flattered that France, so renowned for its culture, should be giving a work of art to America. But transatlantic enthusiasm stopped there.”Needless to say, things got worked out and the Statue of Liberty came to reside in New York Harbor welcoming immigrants and returning Americans for the past 131 years. It remains a beacon of hope for immigrants the world over. And it is perhaps in this context that we as Americans should read this very interesting book and reflect upon how our freedoms have fostered democratic ideals in people from other nations, particularly at a time when by attempting to keep our country safe, we may greatly limit entry for many of those who desperately desire to achieve the freedoms that we were born with.

An amazing book that people don't realize what was involved in such a beautiful work of art and how long ago this was accomplished. The people were way ahead of their time and THANK YOU for all the time and effort you made to make this possible for us to treasure andenjoy for many, many years.

An in depth look at how we came to own the Statue of Liberty, and the history of her continual evolution into our hearts, and into our respect for this great country in which we live.

A well written and informative piece incorporating the political, economic, and philosophical history surrounding the statue. It's a nice stand-alone read but should be especially enjoyable for the knowledgeable nineteenth and twentieth century history buff.

Great history of the idea and creation and construction of the Statue of Liberty. Also little known facts of Ellis island .

Great read
